NYSC Exemption Letter
According to the National Youth Service Corps Decree of 1993, section 2 subsection (1) outlines the following criteria for exemption from the service corps:
If a person is over the age of thirty (30) years at the time of graduation or obtaining their diploma or professional qualification.
If they have served in the Armed Forces of the Federation or the Nigeria Police Force for a period exceeding nine months.
If they are employed by any of the following:
1. The Nigerian Security Organization
2. The State Security Service
3. The National Intelligence Agency
4. The Defence Intelligence Service
5. If they have received any National Honour.
Individuals meeting these conditions are exempted from service and are issued Certificates of Exemption.

Eligibility
Nigerian graduates, whether educated domestically or abroad, possessing B.Sc, B.A, or HND qualifications from institutions sanctioned by the NUC, NTBE, or NCCE, qualify for an Exemption Certificate.
Nonetheless, graduates trained abroad must present their certificates to the Mobilization Department for assessment.
Process of Collection of Certificate of Exemption
The Certificate of Exemption is for two categories of people:
1. For Home Trained Graduates
The procedure is initiated at the Corps Producing Institutions. These tertiary institutions furnish NYSC with a comprehensive list of their graduates, along with the Senate-approved results.
NYSC then processes this data to generate a printout distinguishing those slated for service and those exempted.
The print-out undergoes verification and rectification at the institutions before being returned to NYSC as a finalized document.
Using this print-out, Certificates of Exemption are produced, documented, and returned to the institutions for distribution to the eligible individuals.
It’s important to note that domestically trained graduates can only receive their Certificate of Exemption from their respective graduation institution, not from the NYSC office.
2. For Foreign Trained Graduates
The process commences with the assessment of credentials and other pertinent documents, such as the international passport.
Following the assessment, the foreign-trained graduate undergoes registration, which is conducted in person at the NYSC directorate headquarters in Abuja.
It is during this registration that determinations are made regarding who will be enlisted for service and who will be granted exemption.
Certificates of Exemption are then generated for those exempted from service. These certificates are to be retrieved at the NYSC directorate headquarters at the designated time.
The retrieval of Certificates of Exemption is organized into three batches according to the service year, contingent upon the registration date. This information will also be conveyed to exempted graduates during the registration procedure.
