CRUK PhD Scholarship: A Ph.D. should be a fun and stimulating experience. In order to pursue jobs in scientific research, they are looking for talented and driven graduates with backgrounds in the biological sciences, mathematics, computer science, and/or chemistry. Their four-year fully funded Ph.D. studentships include full sponsorship for all study-related costs, including tuition, bench fees, and stipend payments.
They designed the program in conjunction with the scientific community and in close cooperation with our knowledgeable partners, Black in Cancer (link is external) and the Windsor Fellowship, as part of their commitment to equality, diversity, and inclusion in research (link is external).
In 2023, there will be a total of four Ph.D. scholarships offered during this first pilot year.
The program will develop over time, and its eligibility for other groups that are likewise underrepresented in our research community will be reviewed.
About the CRUK PhD Scholarship
As part of their commitment to Equality, Diversity and Inclusion in Research, we have developed this program in consultation with our research community and in close collaboration with our expert partners, Black in Cancer and the Windsor Fellowship.
During this first pilot year, a total of four Ph.D. scholarships will be available in 2024.

What is Funded
You will be provided with:
A fully-funded 4-year Ph.D. studentship (non-clinical) according to our standard Ph.D. funding rates including stipend, research consumables, and UK home tuition fees
A place on one of the doctoral training programs at a CRUK Centre
A comprehensive program of mentoring, career support, leadership training, and networking led by the Windsor Fellowship and Black in Cancer, in addition to the support provided by the CRUK Centres, to drive your career forward and realize your full potential to beat cancer
Duration, Funding, and Stipend
CRUK Ph.D. program accepts four to eight new students every year and is extremely competitive, so, they receive hundreds of applications from all over the world when they are hiring.
Graduate students have four years to develop their research thanks to studentships funded by Cancer Research UK (CRUK).
Although many students find themselves connecting and cooperating with more than one group as their project develops, projects are normally carried out inside a single research group.
For the duration of their four-year study, successful candidates are given a significant non-taxable stipend that covers tuition, bench fees, and stipend. Studentship-based research groups are given the proper amount of funds to guarantee that the project is properly supported.

Scholarship Eligibility Criteria
1. The scholarship program is aimed at students from Black heritage backgrounds pursuing a Ph.D. in cancer-related fields.
2. The scheme is open to people who self-identify as being from a Black heritage background, including a mixed background.
- For example Black African, Black Caribbean, Black Other, Mixed background (to include Black African, Black Caribbean, or other Black backgrounds).
3. You must also meet the general entry requirements for the Ph.D. program at a CRUK Centre, which typically include:
- hold or expect to graduate with a first or upper-second-class undergraduate honors degree or equivalent in a relevant subject (or equivalent from a non-UK university)
- have appropriate research experience as part of, or outside of, an undergraduate or master’s degree course in a relevant subject
- meet English language requirements as set by the host institution
4. Four studentship places are available for our first round starting in September 2024.
- Two of these will be at the CRUK City of London Centre and two at the CRUK Cambridge Centre.

- You’ll then receive an invitation to attend one of our virtual Insight Sessions, an interactive webinar where you can find out about life as a Ph.D. student and get tips and advice on how to successfully apply to a Ph.D. Program.
- Their 2024 Insight Sessions have now taken place and further expressions of interest are closed for this cycle.
2. Apply to the Black Leaders in Cancer Ph.D. Scholarship Program
- Submit a formal application to the Windsor Fellowship(link is external)
- If you’re shortlisted, you’ll then receive further support on your Ph.D. application
3. Apply for your Ph.D. studentship
- You’ll be invited to submit a Ph.D. application to either the CRUK City of London Centre or the CRUK Cambridge Centre
- If you’re shortlisted, you’ll be invited to attend an interview at one of these Centres
