James McCune Smith PhD Scholarships provide support to Black UK students so they can pursue Ph.D. research at the institution. About the Scholarships
The Scholarships are named in honor of James McCune Smith, the first African American to get a medical degree from the University of Glasgow in 1837.
Scholarship Key Features

Scholarship Eligibility
1. Candidates must have a UK residency and be of Black African, Black Caribbean, Black Other, Mixed-White and Black Caribbean, or other Mixed origin (to include Black African, Black Caribbean, or Black other).
2. The University is making an effort to address the underrepresentation of certain groups in our Ph.D. programs.
3. Now there is an additional opportunity for black UK students to be given a financed Ph.D. post at the University of Glasgow.
4. Application for another funded-place program may be made at the same time as the application for the James McCune Smith Scholarship. However, there can only be one funded spot accepted.

Scholarship value: 4 years full stipend and fees at UKRI level, i.e. stipend of £18,022 for 2022-2023
Application Process
In order to kick off the research process, 10 James McCune Smith Ph.D. Scholarships will be given out in October 2022.
Eight of them are funded by the University of Glasgow and support research in all subjects.
Two are sponsored by research funds funded by GSK that promote academic disciplines related to GSK Medicinal Chemistry.
How to Apply
Follow the steps below:
1. Look at the faculty’s research interests at the University of Glasgow to suggest a topic and a mentor. In order to get assistance with your application, please fill out and submit an expression of interest form.
2. Make contact with potential employers to begin the application process. When chatting with a potential employer, be cautious to emphasize that you intend to apply for a James McCune Smith Scholarship as one of your financial options.
3. The James McCune Smith PhD Scholarships candidate selects their study topic after consulting with a potential mentor.
4. Use the scholarship portal to submit your personal statement. Up to 500 words should be devoted to your research interests and the reasons you want to be a James McCune Smith Scholar in your personal statement.
5. Additionally, you must submit an application through the university’s MyCampus platform. In the online full application, please list the James McCune Smith Scholarship as one of the funding possibilities under Finance.
6. Applications must be submitted by January 31, 2024, but early submission is encouraged.
GSK-Funded Studentships
GSK Medicinal Chemistry is funding two James McCune Smith Scholarships in subjects that interest them. Organic synthesis and medicinal chemistry are two of their areas of interest.
The placement will last at least six months but might last up to twelve months at GSK’s discretion. There will be a GSK representative on the panel that assesses these submissions.
Applicants must specify if they want to be taken into consideration for the GSK-funded scholarships. Any James McCune Smith Scholarship applicant determines their study subject in cooperation with their potential mentor.
However, a James McCune Smith Scholarship application will only be taken into consideration if the topic is uninteresting to GSK Medicinal Chemistry. This scholarship is funded by the University of Glasgow.
