The Google PhD Fellowship Program acknowledges exceptional graduate students who are conducting innovative and remarkable research in fields closely aligned with computer science and related areas.

The University of Minnesota has the opportunity to put forward a maximum of four (4) eligible candidates for consideration for the Google PhD Fellowship.

To qualify, an applicant’s research must be in line with Google AI Principles and should fall within one or more of the listed fields.

How Do I Apply?

A comprehensive application consists of the following components, which should be submitted as a single PDF to the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies using the link provided below. Applications must be submitted by 4:00 pm PT on August 4, 2024. Late or incomplete applications will not be considered.

1. A cover sheet, signed by the applicant’s UBC department chair, on official letterhead, confirming that the applicant meets the eligibility requirements.

2. A student CV with links to a website and publications (if available), with no specific page limit.

3. A brief CV of the student’s primary supervisor (maximum 1 page).

4. 2 to 3 letters of recommendation from individuals familiar with the student’s work, with one letter required from the student’s thesis supervisor. These letters should be on letterhead and signed, and they should be collected by the applicant and included as part of the application package.

5. A research abstract describing the proposed research (up to 1,000 characters, approximately 200-word limit).

6. A research or dissertation proposal, including references (maximum 8 pages). Ensure that the research proposal includes a title.

7. A student essay response (350-word limit) addressing the desired impact of the research on the field and society, as well as personal, educational, and professional experiences motivating the research interests.

8. A second student essay response (350-word limit) describing a leadership experience where the applicant positively influenced others, helped resolve disputes, or contributed to group efforts over time. Leadership roles may encompass mentoring, organizing tasks, or taking a lead role in projects.

9. Up-to-date, official transcripts for all post-secondary studies (undergraduate and graduate), including both completed and incomplete coursework, transfer courses, and exchange terms.

The due date for submissions is 5:00 PM CST on July 31, 2024.
