Horatio Alger Scholarships for College Students

Horatio Alger Scholarships: One of the largest need-based college scholarship programs in the country, the Horatio Alger Scholarship Program assists high school students who have experienced and overcome significant challenges in their young lives. The Horatio Alger Association targets students who have demonstrated tenacity, integrity, and resolve in overcoming hardship as well as having a serious financial need.

While many programs focus exclusively on rewarding academic excellence or leadership potential.

About Scholarship Program

The Association provided 2,500 students from around the United States and Canada with more than $18 million in undergraduate and graduate need-based scholarships in 2021.

They provide scholarships in the following areas:

State Scholarships

Scholarships Valued at $10,000 Each

In each of the fifty states as well as the District of Columbia, state scholarships are given to qualified students.

High school kids who have endured and conquered significant challenges in their young lives are given special assistance by the program.

The scholarships are supported by Horatio Alger Members who, like the Scholars, have overcome obstacles to become prosperous businesspeople and community leaders.

Scholarship Eligibility Criteria

To be considered for a Horatio Alger State Scholarship, candidates must fulfill the requirements listed below:

1. Be enrolled full-time as a high school junior in the United States

2. Demonstrate a strong desire to enroll in and complete a bachelor’s program at a non-profit, accredited university in the United States (students may start their studies at a two-year institution and then transfer to a four-year institution)

3. Prove a severe lack of funds (adjusted gross family income must be $55,000 or less).

4. Participate in extracurricular and volunteer activities.

5. Show honesty and persistence in overcoming challenges.

6. keep your grade point average (GPA) at least 2.0; and

7. Be a US citizenship

Application Deadline: The undergraduate application is available from December 1, 2023 – March 15, 2024.

Career & Technical Scholarship Program

500 Scholarships at up to $2,500 each

The Career & Technical Scholarship Program s funded by Dennis R. Washington and Jim F. Dicke II, members of the Horatio Alger Association.

Scholarships are given to students who aspire to pursue a career or technical education at a recognized non-profit post-secondary institution in the United States and who have experienced and overcome significant hurdles in their lives.

Scholarship Eligibility Criteria

1. Have completed high school (or earned a high school equivalency credential)

2. Cannot be taking pre-requisite courses and must be enrolled in your program

3. Must be enrolled full-time by Fall 2022 to be eligible.

4. Exhibit a strong commitment to pursue and complete a career or technical program (up to 2 years) at an accredited non-profit post-secondary institution in the United States

5. Demonstrated critical financial need (must be eligible to receive the Federal Pell grant as determined by completion of the FAFSA)

6. Demonstrated perseverance in overcoming adversity

7. Be under the age of 30

8. Be a United States citizen

The funds can be used to cover any expenses related to getting a degree or certificate, such as tuition, fees, books, supplies, travel, and other ancillary charges. The recipient pays all scholarship money directly to the institution.

Targeted Scholarships

The Association has a number of scholarship programs that either demand that a candidate attend a particular university or pursue a particular degree.

National Scholarships

105 scholarships at $25,000 Each

The Horatio Alger National Scholarship Program is one of the major scholarship programs in the country that primarily helps high school students who have faced and overcome significant hurdles in their young lives. It is one of the largest college financial aid programs in the country.

The scholarships are supported by Horatio Alger Members who, like the Scholars, have overcome obstacles to become prosperous businesspeople and community leaders.

Students who meet the requirements in all 50 states and the District of Columbia are given the National Scholarship.

During the spring of their senior year, National Scholars are given an all-expenses paid travel to Washington, D.C., to attend the National Scholars Conference.
