Coimbra Group Universities Scholarship is a fully funded scholarship for talented young African researchers, from Latin American Universities and European neighborhoods. Even if you are an international or domestic student you are permitted to apply. Carefully read this article to get more information.

Coimbra Group Universities Scholarship

The Coimbra Group, an association of long-standing, comprehensive, multidisciplinary European universities of high international standard, was established in 1985 and formally established by charter in 1987.

Its members are committed to fostering special academic and cultural ties in order to promote internationalization, academic collaboration, excellence in learning and research, and service to society for the benefit of all.

The Group’s other objectives include influencing European education and research policy and creating best practices through the sharing of experiences.

Scholarship Programme for Young African Researchers

Young African scholars from higher education institutions in Sub-Saharan Africa are welcome to attend universities in the Coimbra Group for brief stays (often 1 to 3 months).

This scholarship program’s main goals are to give scholars the opportunity to do research they are already involved in at their home school and to support them in developing academic and research networks in Europe.

The Coimbra Group Office is responsible for the administrative management of the applications, while the scholarships are financially supported by the Coimbra Group member universities taking part in this initiative.

The 2023 iteration of this scholarship program will have participation from the following Coimbra Group universities:

  • University of Coimbra (Portugal)
  • University of Cologne (Germany)
  • Trinity College Dublin (Ireland)
  • University of Granada (Spain)
  • University of Graz (Austria)
  • University of Groningen (The Netherlands)

  • University of Turku (Finland)

Eligibility Criteria

Applicants must fulfill ALL of the following criteria at the same time:

1. Be born on or after 1 January 1978.

2. Be nationals of and current residents of a country in Sub-Saharan Africa.

3. Be current staff members of a university or an equivalent higher education institution in SubSaharan Africa.

4. Be preferable to doctoral/postdoctoral or equivalent status.

5. Be in possession of an acceptance letter/email from the tutor/partner with whom the work program will be undertaken in the host institution. This document is mandatory.

6. Use the Coimbra Group Office electronic application process.

7. Apply for one university only. Multiple applications will not be considered valid.

8. Submit all information in English only.

How to Apply/Application Deadline

The Coimbra Group website’s online application will be accessible until April 7 at midnight (Brussels time).

For the 2023 iteration of the Coimbra Group Scholarship Program, only the institutions listed in the table above are participating.

Each application will receive a personal acknowledgment from the Coimbra Group Office.

Candidates should get an email from the Coimbra Group Office within two weeks of submitting their online application confirming whether or not their application has been verified.

The sole acknowledgment of receipt will be this one. Candidates whose applications were not submitted correctly or there was a technical issue will not receive the confirmation mail. If so, e-mail [email protected] by April 23, 2023.

Selection Process

The Coimbra Group Office will conduct the administrative review of applications to identify applicants who satisfy the requirements.

The host universities will be in charge of choosing the candidates. The host university may send a letter of invitation to the chosen candidate straight after a decision has been made.

By the end of June 2024, the Coimbra Group Office will get in touch with every applicant and let them know how their application fared.

Successful candidates must make sure that their home institution will give them a leave of absence to carry out the proposed visit if they are currently employed by a university.

Scholarship Programme for Young Professors and Researchers from Latin American Universities

In January 2004, the first edition of the “Coimbra Group Scholarship Programme for Young Professors and Researchers from Latin American Universities” was introduced.

This program encourages mobility and academic contact between the two regions, Europe and Latin America, by providing grants to pay for brief research visits.

The Coimbra Group is a consortium of 41 European universities that foster academic and research connections between Europe and Latin America, among other things.

Exchanges are sponsored in a number of ways, one of which is through this call for grant applications for research visitations.

The 2023 edition of this scholarship program will have participation from the following Coimbra Group universities:

Eligibility Criteria

Applicants must fulfill all of the following criteria:

1. To be a national of and currently resident in a Latin American country. Candidates already living and/or studying in Europe will not be considered.

2. To hold a university degree or equivalent.

3. To be linked, as a professor or researcher, to a Latin American University recognized as such by the authorities of the country.

4. To use the Coimbra Group Office electronic application process. Only one application per candidate will be accepted.

5. To submit online an acceptance letter/email from the tutor/partner with whom the work program will be undertaken in the host institution. This document is mandatory.

6. To be born on or after 1 January 1982. Previously selected candidates can apply for a second grant, but they will not be prioritized.

Scholarship Programme for Young Researchers from the European Neighbourhood

Young Researchers from higher education institutions in the European Neighbourhood listed below are offered brief visits (often lasting 1 to 3 months) by universities in the Coimbra Group.

This scholarship program’s main goals are to give scholars the opportunity to do research they are already involved in at their home school and to support them in developing academic and research contacts in Europe.

The Coimbra Group Office is responsible for the administrative management of the applications, while the scholarships are financially supported by the Coimbra Group member universities taking part in this initiative.
