The Benue State Government founded Benue State University in 1991.

In the academic year 1992–1993, the university began operations with four faculties: arts, education, science, and social sciences.

The 1993–1994 academic year saw the addition of the faculties of law and management sciences, while the 2014–2015 academic year saw the addition of the faculty of environmental sciences.

To be a Centre of Excellence in creating knowledge and developing a complete person who is capable of not only responding to the cultural, social, political and economic needs of the environment but also setting the agenda for change.

The mission of the University was clearly defined in the stated objectives as contained in the Edict establishing the University thus:

1. To encourage and promote the advancement of knowledge and to hold out to all persons without discrimination of race, creed or political conviction, the opportunity of acquiring a University education;

2. To encourage the effective application of higher education to the needs of the State through research and extension and consultancy

3. To provide ready access for Benue State Citizens to higher education for self-reliance

4. To promote, preserve and propagate the social and cultural heritage of the diverse people of the state and

5. To engage in any other activities of a developmental University of the highest standard.

 BSU Philosophy

The Philosophy of Benue State University is to seek to mould the total being by developing the mind and imparting both theoretical and practical knowledge that encourages self-reliance in the individual.

The programmes of study and training have therefore been designed to assist the individual to understand, exploit, and if need be change his environment.

Benue State University is to act as an agency for developing the complete person (morally, intellectually and physically) who would contribute to the growth of his social, cultural, political and economic environment and apply his skills to raise Benue State from poverty to prosperity
