Sloan Research Fellowships

Sloan Research Fellowships

For over six decades, the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation has been awarding the prestigious Sloan Research Fellowships on an annual basis.

These fellowships, spanning a duration of two years and providing $75,000 in funding, are designed to ignite critical research initiatives led by emerging scientists and scholars who demonstrate exceptional potential.

The recipients of these fellowships are individuals actively involved in research across various fields, including chemistry, computer science, Earth system science, economics, mathematics, neuroscience, physics, or closely related areas.

The selection of fellows is primarily based on their individual research accomplishments, innovative thinking, and their potential to make significant contributions to their respective scientific communities.

Eligibility Criteria

Applicants are required to hold a Ph.D. or an equivalent doctoral degree in disciplines such as chemistry, computer science, Earth system science, economics, mathematics, molecular biology, neuroscience, physics, or related fields.

They must also hold a faculty position at an educational institution in the United States or Canada, with the condition that the position is tenure-track but not yet tenured as of September 15th in the year of nomination. Additionally, the faculty role should encompass regular teaching responsibilities.

The Sloan Research Fellowship Program seeks to recognize and reward promising early-career faculty members with the potential to introduce transformative innovations in their respective fields.

Typically, successful candidates for this Fellowship exhibit a strong track record of significant independent research achievements that highlight their creativity and the likelihood of becoming future leaders in the scientific community.

Nominees are usually a few years past their Ph.D. completion to demonstrate a competitive history of substantial independent research.

In alignment with the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation’s ongoing commitment to supporting underrepresented minorities in the sciences, the Foundation strongly encourages the nomination of qualified women and minority candidates.

Required Documents

1. A formal nomination letter from a department head or senior researcher, officially endorsing the candidate and outlining their qualifications, initiative, and research contributions.

2. The candidate’s comprehensive curriculum vitae, including a list of their scientific publications.

3. Two exemplary research articles authored by the candidate, highlighting their independent research endeavors.

4. A succinct, one-page statement provided by the candidate outlining their significant scientific accomplishments and immediate research plans.

Three letters of recommendation from other researchers (preferably not all affiliated with the same institution) expressing their support for the candidate’s nomination.

It is important to underscore that both the nomination letters and the letters of support carry substantial weight in the selection process.

Selection Committees carefully review these letters as they provide nominators and support writers with the opportunity to offer insights about the nominees that may not be evident from other application materials such as the CV and publication list.

The Committees recommend that letters of support be authored by individuals capable of providing an objective and well-informed assessment of the nominee’s work.

Letters submitted by co-authors, close associates, or mentors may carry less weight compared to those written by individuals with a greater professional detachment from the nominee’s work.

Agency Deadline: September 15, 2021
