The Jakes Gerwel Fellowship is currently open to student applications for the Graduate Teaching Fellowship (GTF) for the academic year 2024.

This fellowship is tailored for students who are about to embark on their Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) studies at partner universities, which include the University of the Western Cape, University of Cape Town, Stellenbosch University, University of Pretoria, University of Johannesburg, or University of the Witwatersrand.

This fellowship provides students with valuable resources such as personal coaches, mentors, and experienced teachers, along with optional activities.

Upon the successful completion of their PGCE qualification, students become qualified high school teachers and then enter a 2-year induction phase where they are placed in partner schools as newly certified educators.

Eligibility Requirements

Before applying, applicants must meet the following minimum entry requirements. Please note that failing to meet these criteria will result in your application not being considered:

1. You must be a South African citizen or hold permanent residency in South Africa.

2. Your age should not exceed 30 years at the application deadline.

3. You must have either completed an appropriate undergraduate degree or be in your final year of undergraduate studies.

4. Your intention must be to pursue a PGCE qualification in 2024.

5. You should be eligible for enrollment in a Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) program (note that MRTEQ does not acknowledge postgraduate qualifications).

6. You must maintain a strong academic record.

7. You must have applied to study or be currently enrolled at one of the partner universities, including UWC, UCT, SU, UP, UJ, or WITS.

8. A genuine passion for teaching and education is a requirement.

9. You should aspire to become a high school teacher.

10. Commitment to full participation in the JGF program is expected.

11. Your values and vision should align with JGF’s mission of driving social change in South African education.

How to Apply for the Jake Gerwel Fellowship

1. Before beginning the application process, candidates must complete the Eligibility Quiz. Those who pass the quiz will receive detailed instructions on how to proceed with their application.

2. If you know someone who meets the fellowship’s criteria, you have the option to nominate them. If you have been nominated by another individual, you will still need to complete the Eligibility Quiz mentioned above.

3. Applicants are strongly encouraged to download and review the JGF Application Guide in PDF format before starting their application.

4. It is mandatory to submit clear copies of the following supporting documents alongside your online application. Failure to provide any of these documents may lead to the disqualification of your application:

5. A certified copy of your ID document or proof of South African permanent residence

6. Certified copies of your complete tertiary academic records

7. Evidence of your application to or acceptance at one of the partner universities, preferably on the institution’s letterhead.
