Albert Shanker’s Scholarship

The Albert Shanker Scholarship was established to cover the costs of the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS)* certification for qualifying New York State public school teachers.

The Albert Shanker Grant provides cash to qualifying New York State public school teachers pursuing their first National Board Certification.

The UFT Albert Shanker grant is a $5000 grant for graduating seniors from NYC public schools. The scholarship has rigorous financial qualifying conditions, although it is otherwise available to qualified students.

Scholarship requirements

Candidates for the Albert Shanker Grant must first fill out the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS) Candidate Application online (link is external). Candidates must additionally pay an annual NBPTS registration fee.

Once the NBPTS application is finished, applicants must apply for the Albert Shanker Award online through NYSED.

If an applicant is determined to be qualified for and receives the Albert Shanker Grant, the New York State Education Department will pay for the remaining three components of the National Board.
