Establishment of McKay Scholarships
In Florida, there were more students with impairments in the late 1990s. Despite the fact that they were eligible for Exceptional Student Education, not all of them could attend public schools (ESE).
Care has to be given to these kids immediately. John McKay, the grandfather of a kid with disabilities, served as president of the Florida State Senate.
He came up with a plan that provided parents the choice between spending ESE monies and changing their child’s school.
Depending on their child’s needs, parents will be able to select between public and private schools.
The sole objective of this scholarship program was to develop an exceptional learning environment for kids with impairments.
The scholarship program was named afterJohn Mckay, and it quickly became the most well-known scholarship for the disabled in America.
Eligibility For the McKay Scholarship Program
You must first apply to your school before withdrawing from it in order to be considered for the McKay scholarship.
1. To be eligible for the McKay scholarship program, you must submit a 504 Accommodation Plan or an Individual Education Plan (IEP).
2. You must have registered to finance a Florida public school in the GRADES k-12 Florida education finance program in October or February.
3. You must also have been a pre-kindergarten student who was said to have received early learning specialized instruction at the office.
4. You must have completed pre-kindergarten and be at least four years old.
5. You may have visited the Florida deafblind school in October or February.
6. If you meet the above criteria, you may be eligible to apply for McKay scholarships. If you do not have a 504 accommodation or an IEP, you may still be eligible.
7. You may be a child raised by someone other than your parents if you are accompanied by a member of the United States Armed Forces and transfer from a country to a Florida school.
Parent Responsibility for the McKay Scholarship Program
1. As previously stated, the McKay Scholarship allows parents to select which Florida public school their child will attend.
2. Before you can withdraw your child from public school, you must first file an intent to apply for the scholarship program.
3. After completing the intent to participate form, you must contact the school district to inquire about the available public schools for your child.
4. You must be aware that you must complete the McKay scholarship intent form at least two months before receiving your first scholarship payment.
5. You must also ensure that your child is eligible and select a private school.
6. You must also ensure that your child abides by the private school’s rules and regulations.
7. It is your responsibility to see that your child attends a private school during the school year. Only illness or other serious reasons can cause your child to miss school.
8. If you want to know how much your child is eligible for a scholarship, look into statewide evaluations.
Award for the McKay Scholarship Program
The scholarship amount is equal to the amount you would have earned if you had attended the public school assigned to you or the tuition and fees of the private school you choose.
It is important to note that the scholarship does not cover all private schools. Your parents handle any tuition or fees that exceed the scholarship amount.

Deadline for the Scholarship Award
You must submit your intent by July 3rd and be registered and enrolled by August 2nd in order to be eligible for the entire scholarship amount.
For those who submit their intent by September 2nd, 75% of the scholarship money will be awarded. Before October 2nd, sign up.
To be eligible for 50% of the award, you must submit an intent form by December 3 and enroll by January 2.
Send in your intent form by January 31st to be considered for 25% of this scholarship. You must enroll by March 2 in order to be eligible for the award.
