About Macarthur Fellows Program

In alignment with this purpose, the Foundation directly grants fellowships to individuals, whether they are writers, scientists, artists, social scientists, humanists, educators, entrepreneurs, or professionals in various fields, regardless of their institutional affiliations.
Awardees can utilize the fellowship to further their expertise, embark on innovative projects, or even transition to different fields or career paths if they choose to do so.
While nominees are assessed for their accomplishments, it’s important to note that the fellowship is not a recognition of a lifetime of achievements; rather, it’s an investment in an individual’s originality, insights, and potential.
The primary objective of the MacArthur Fellows Program is to empower recipients to express their creative instincts for the betterment of society.
The Foundation neither imposes any specific deliverables nor evaluates the creativity of MacArthur Fellows during the fellowship’s duration.
This fellowship is a “no strings attached” grant aimed at supporting individuals, not specific projects. Each fellowship includes a stipend of $800,000, disbursed in equal quarterly installments over a five-year period.
Eligibility Criteria for the Macarthur Fellows Program
There are no restrictions on becoming a Fellow, except that nominees must be either residents or citizens of the United States and must not be government officials.
The selection of Fellows is based on three key criteria:
1. Exceptional creativity,
2. The potential for significant future contributions demonstrated by a track record of noteworthy achievements, and
3. The likelihood that the Fellowship will support and enable further creative work.
How Fellows Are Chosen
The MacArthur Fellowship program identifies potential nominees through a diverse group of invited external nominators who represent a wide array of fields and interests.
These nominators are encouraged to leverage their expertise, achievements, and extensive experience to put forward the most innovative individuals they are aware of, both within and beyond their own areas of expertise.
Nominee submissions undergo an assessment by an independent Selection Committee, consisting of approximately twelve leaders spanning various domains, including arts, sciences, humanities, professions, and the for-profit and nonprofit sectors.
Each nomination is evaluated based on the program’s selection criteria, which includes the nomination letter, the nominee’s original work, and input from other experts collected by program staff.
Following a comprehensive, multi-stage evaluation process, the Selection Committee presents its recommendations to the President and Board of Directors of the MacArthur Foundation.
Typically, the annual list of Fellows is unveiled in September, with no specific quotas or limitations, but generally features 20 to 30 new Fellows each year. Since 1981, a total of 1061 individuals have been honored as MacArthur Fellows.
It’s essential to note that those involved in the nomination, evaluation, and selection process do so anonymously, ensuring that their assessments remain confidential and unbiased, free from external influence.
