Virginia Tobacco scholarship program has helped hundreds of students get their bachelor’s degrees from its inception. Although this program has evolved into a loan repayment/talent attraction grant program it is still helpful to students who are eligible.
About Virginia Tobacco Scholarship Program
A financial aid program called the Virginia Tobacco Scholarship enables students to complete their bachelor’s degrees without facing significant financial challenges.
The Virginia Tobacco Region Revitalization Commission established the Virginia Tobacco Scholarship in 2002 as a means of assisting students in receiving high-quality education without having to bear a heavy financial burden.
The program has changed recently, meanwhile. It currently functions more like a grant program for talent attraction and repayment.
Students still benefited from the Virginia Tobacco Scholarship despite this.

Scholarship Value and Worth
You will be paid $90 for each semester hour ($100 for individuals who transferred 60 credits from a community college), or $60 for each quarter hour if the school runs on that time scale.
If funds are still available for summer, the Tobacco Region Revitalization Commission will fully sponsor one degree for a maximum of two semesters every academic year.
You can apply for a $1000 work incentive for each semester of scholarship you received once you have earned your bachelor’s degree. The scholarship recipients will receive the reward each year.
In addition to all of these options, you can also secure a full-time job for one year in the tobacco region for a salary of $2,000 per month.

Requirements for the Tobacco Scholarship
1. You must be a legal resident of the US and must have resided in the Southwest or Southern region for at least a year.
2. You must have a good academic standing.
3. Previous winners of the scholarship can reapply.
4. You must be currently enrolled at an accredited institution in a bachelor’s program for at least 6 months (in-state or out-of-state).
5. An official transcript with your GPA (on a 4.0 scale) is required.
6. Priority is given to descendants of tobacco quota holders/growers from 1998 to 2004
7.2-year programs at a 4-year university or college are acceptable if not offered by the Virginia community college that serves the applicant
8. You are expected to maintain a minimum GPA of 2.0
9. High school students are not eligible for this scholarship
10. A completed 2023-2024 FAFSA form is required
Your Scholarship Application will be rejected if you have/do any of the things listed below:
- Your GPA is some less than what is required.
- You plan on attending a community college.
- Your application is incomplete, or you didn’t submit the required documents.
- You reside in Lynchburg City.
- Your degree has already been funded.
- You are going for a graduate degree.
- You are a non-degree-seeking applicant.

The tobacco scholarship is unusual in that former recipients can reapply and are even given priority over new candidates during the selection process.
