UTSA Scholarship

A number of scholarships supported by the school and UTSA sponsors are managed through the Financial Aid and Scholarships office.

You must submit the General Application from the Scholarship Hub each year in order to be considered for these scholarships. Make careful you review the requirements and deadlines for each scholarship opportunity.

Scholarship opportunities are offered by many UTSA departments to qualified students, some of which are listed on the UTSA Scholarship Hub.

How to Access the Scholarship Hub

1. Using your myUTSA ID and passphrase, access the UTSA Scholarship Hub.

2. Complete the General Application for the Scholarship Hub.

3. Click Finish and Submit to finish your Scholarship Hub’s general application. You might be qualified for further scholarship opportunities based on this application.

4. By selecting Apply next to each additional scholarship option, you can review the terms and conditions. If you meet the requirements, hit Finish and Submit after responding to each question.

Helpful Tips on UTSA Scholarship Hub

1. Prepare essays, email addresses for those writing letters of recommendation, and any other materials that may be needed. If essays, letters of recommendation, or other components are needed for your scholarship, they will be stated in the application.

UTSA Scholarship Hub Different Opportunities

1. Alvarez Fellows Undergraduate Research Fellowship

The Carlos Alvarez College of Business’s excellent undergraduate students can cultivate their research interests and research skills through the 2.5-year Alvarez Fellowship program.

The Alvarez Fellows will engage in activities that promote experiential learning while learning about the nature and scope of research that is done in many business disciplines.

In the first course of a three-course sequence that leads to competency in business research, students learn research methods.

The students will also carry out a personal research project under the guidance of faculty mentors with the intention of drafting and submitting a paper to a peer-reviewed journal or academic conference.

Each long semester of the program, fellows receive up to $5,000 in stipends, which are renewable for up to 2.5 years if they complete program requirements.

2. Digital Defense, Inc. Endowed Scholarship for Undergraduates in Computer Science

1. The recipient(s) must be actively pursuing a degree in the Department and must be enrolled at least part-time, as decided by the university. Depending on endowment distributions and the candidate pool in any given year, the quantity and value of scholarships may change.

2. Applicants must declare a concentration in software engineering, cyber security, or a successor program (s).

3. A scholarship committee of the College, or its successor, will make the final decision regarding who will receive the award.

3. Dr. B. Thyagarajan Endowed Scholarship

Dr. Thyagarajan established this scholarship shortly after his retirement in 2000 after 26 years of exemplary service, teaching, and scholarship.

Professor Dr. Thyagarajan was the founding director of the Division of Earth and Physical Sciences.

Eligibility Criteria

1. Incoming Freshmen or Current Undergraduates enrolled full-time (12+ credit hours/semester)

2. Incoming Freshmen: 860+ SAT or 18+ ACT, and Top 50% Rank in graduating class

3. Current Undergraduates: cumulative 2.6+ GPA (4.0 scale) and completed 1-60 semester credit hours

4. Major: Chemistry, Geology, Physics

5. Must demonstrate financial need, as determined by the FAFSA on file with the UTSA Office of Student Financial Aid

Additional Requirements

1. Applicants: it is suggested that you submit 1-2 Letters of Recommendation

2. Recipients: submit a 2-page essay on the life of United Farm Workers leader Cesar Chavez or India’s freedom movement leader Mahatma Gandhi

4. IME Becas Scholarship

IME Becas Scholarship

A need-based initiative, the IME BECAS Scholarship is awarded. The Office of Global Initiatives, Financial Aid and Scholarships, and Dreamers Resource Center have all devised methodologies for determining need.

The IME BECAS 2022 Scholarship is not a competitive scholarship, thus even if it is given out, the recipient will not be eligible to pay in-state tuition rates.

Students must complete this form before September 30, 2022, along with all necessary supporting documentation, in order to be taken into consideration.

Awarded students will be informed of their awards no later than October 5, 2024, and they must accept them no later than October 10, 2024.

The amount of each scholarship will be between $500 and $1,000. Based on the essay and financial necessity declaration, the committee will decide how much money will be awarded.

Eligibility Criteria

1. Undergraduate students of Mexican origin must have at least a 2.5 cumulative GPA

2. Graduate students of Mexican origin must have at least a 3.0 cumulative GPA

3. Maintain good academic standing and Satisfactory Academic Progress as defined by Financial Aid & Scholarships

4. Enrollment (taking classes) as a UTSA student the semester prior to the summer session

5. Must be enrolled full-time and be designated as degree-seeking

6. Demonstrate financial need

Required Documents

1. A 250-word statement explaining how she/he is a good ambassador for Mexico and how she/he represents Mexico at UTSA.

2. A statement fully explaining the need for financial assistance. Include any recent change in the financial situation and explain why the total amount of funding necessary for Fall 2022 cannot be obtained. You may attach any additional support documentation, but it is not a requirement to do so for consideration.

3. UTSA must verify that the selected students are Mexican nationals or are of Mexican origin by requesting one of the following documents: Mexican birth certificate, Mexican birth certificate of their parents, Mexican passport, Consular ID Card, or Mexican elector’s identification (IFE or INE).

5. Bernard P. Sagik Memorial Scholarship Fund

This scholarship is in honor of Dr. Bernard Sagik, the first Dean of the College of Sciences and Mathematics. Many of his former colleagues and students carry on his legacy through their contributions to this fund.

1. Current Undergraduate, enrolled full-time (12+ credit hours/semester)

2. Completed 24+ semester credit hours at UTSA

3. Major: any in the College of Sciences

4. GPA: cumulative 2.8+ (4.0 scale)

5. Preference is given to applicants who are first-generation students; within this preference, academic merit and financial need may be considered

6. Automatically renewed for a total period of four years if all eligibility criteria are met

6. Dr. Claire Holshouser Scholarship

Claire Kline, M.D. Annual Scholarship in honor of Shirley Fisher Kline and Memory of Dr. Robert Kline

This scholarship was established by Dr. Claire Holshouser. It is awarded to students pursuing a course of study leading to medical school.

7. Terry Scholars® at UTSA

Thirteen of the public colleges in Texas offer Terry Scholarships. Three factors—academic excellence, exhibited leadership, and financial need—are taken into consideration when choosing Terry Scholars.

Texas high school grads accepted to and nominated by Texas public colleges are given the Terry Scholarship.

The scholarship can pay for up to eight semesters of a bachelor’s degree program or the entire cost of tuition.

For one study abroad experience, scholars who achieve extra GPA requirements may also be eligible to earn additional assistance.

At UTSA, Terry Scholars are engaged members of the campus community who take part in the Terry Scholars student organization.

Seniors in Texas high schools may apply if they plan to enroll in college in the fall of 2023.

Eligibility Requirement

To be eligible for the Terry Scholars program at UTSA, you must:

1. Be entering UTSA as a full-time first-year student immediately following graduation from a Texas high school

2. Be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident

3. Be a Texas resident

4. Have graduated from a Texas high school

5. Be in the top 25% of high school ranking

6. Strong record of community volunteerism and leadership

7. Demonstrate financial need

8. Submission of SAT and SAT scores is optional

Application Deadline

  • Have UTSA Admissions application, Terry Scholars application, and FAFSA on file by December 1, 2024.
  • Recommended to submit all required material for university admissions by Nov. 1st

Selection Process

Once submissions are complete, a committee will review applications and submit a list of nominees to the Terry Foundation.

The Terry Foundation will then confirm that list and extend invitations for interviews. Following the completion of the interviews, UTSA will receive a list of awarded scholars.

8. UTSA Top Scholar program

The UTSA Top Scholar program is a renowned and highly acclaimed top scholar program that has produced award-winning, academically gifted, and extraordinary servant leaders.

For this fascinating program, we are seeking top-notch high school students from all throughout Texas.

Our Top Scholars build strong, long-lasting friendships with their classmates and faculty members while engaging in intellectual conversation.

They are urged to broaden their perspectives through volunteer opportunities that converge their academic passions with local problems.

Seniors in high school who live in Texas and plan to enroll in college in the fall of 2023 are eligible to apply.

Top Scholar Benefits

Those selected to be Top Scholars will receive a comprehensive, last-dollar scholarship for up to four years (eight regular semesters) that includes funding for tuition, fees, and room and board. They also receive support for internships and study abroad programs.

However, being a Top Scholar is so much more than that. This is a program, not just a scholarship, where students:

  • Engage in signature enrichment programming,
  • Develop comprehensive professional portfolios,
  • Live and learn in a community of scholars,
  • Receive auto-enrollment into the Honors College,
  • Obtain access to numerous research opportunities,
  • Experience exclusive interaction with senior university staff and faculty, and
  • Are offered engagement opportunities with community leaders.

Being a UTSA Top Scholar is a privilege limited to only a select few. As you can imagine, the program is highly competitive.

Selection will be based on a holistic review process comprised of a review of scholastic records and a written application.

During the final stage of the selection process, the most promising candidates will be invited for an interview to determine the final cohort selection.

All applicants to the UTSA Top Scholar program must have a complete application to UTSA on file.

Top Scholar Eligibility

Students who have the best chance of being invited to UTSA for a selection interview will be Texas residents graduating from high school in 2023:

1. 1440 or higher on the new SAT* (SAT score submission is optional for the Fall 2023 incoming class)

2. 32 or higher on the ACT* (ACT score submission is optional for the Fall 2023 incoming class)

3. Class rank in the top five percent of their graduating class

4. Record of community volunteerism and leadership in school

5. All majors are welcome

Top Scholar Requirements to Maintain Eligibility

1. Maintain a UTSA GPA of at least 3.50

2. Live on campus

3. Complete 30 hours each academic year

4. Complete at least one community service and leadership development project each year

5. Actively participate in all aspects of the program
