University grants may be needed to further your education when deciding to study at any university in any country as an investment in your future. International students who desire to attend the institution have a variety of funding options at their disposal.
They range from partial funding to paying a portion of your fees through full funding, which pays all of your program costs as well as your living expenses and round-trip airfare to the UK.
University Grants for Students
A grant is a sum of money given by an end entity often a public body, a charitable foundation, or a specialized institution that makes grants—to a person or another entity (typically a non-profit organization, occasionally a business or a local government body) for a particular goal associated with the good of the public. Grants are not repaid like loans are.
Ghent University Top-up Grants
Ghent University provides Top-up Grants to candidates from all countries on the OESO-DAC list, who wish to obtain a master’s degree at Ghent University. The call will only be open for new students applying for a master’s or master-after-master program taught in English.
For the AY 2022-2023, 10 scholarships can be awarded.
The scholarship fee consists of:
- Allowance of € 1000 per month.
- All-in insurance (health, civil liability, repatriation)
How to Apply?
1. You cannot apply yourself for this Top-Up Grant. There’s no application form to fill in.
2. The program you would like to study at, decides which top-student applicant will be in their top 3 list. If you want to stress the need for such a top-up grant you can contact the study program to motivate why they should take you up on their shortlist of candidates. If you are on that list, you will get a notification of that.
3. There’s no open call for these grants, they are now incorporated into the normal application scheme to obtain admission.
4. Only academically admitted students will be considered.
5. Only applications from students enrolled in a full program will be considered for a Top-Up Grant. Students who follow a preparatory program or a linking program cannot receive a Top-Up grant.
6. The application for academic admission should be submitted before the 1st of April according to this procedure.
7. In the enrolment application under ‘Financial Means’, you can indicate the financial means that you would like to use to finance your studies. After choosing ‘Scholarship’, you can mention ‘Top-Up Grant’.
You can no longer apply to study at Ghent University and you cannot be considered for the topping-up grant if you apply for admission later than the 1st of April.
Who’s Eligible?
New students who wish to obtain a Master’s or Master-after-Master’s degree at Ghent University.
Degree
- You have to have a bachelor’s degree when applying for a Master’s program.
- You have to have a Master’s degree when applying for a Master-after-Master program.
Nationality
You have to come from a country on the longlist of the OESO-DAC country list.
Priority is given to students from the first three columns of the country list. As an exception, students from the fourth column can be considered upon clear motivation by their program.
Selection Procedure
The coordinator of each English-taught master program proposes their top 3 applicants to the Committee for Development Cooperation (CDC).
The decision will be taken at the end of May by the CDC. Results will be announced at the latest half of June by e-mail.

Selection Committee
The Committee for Development Cooperation makes a selection of the applications based on the recommendations obtained from a working group of this Committee.
The Committee then proceeds to formulate well-founded recommendations for the Executive Committee of Ghent University.
Selection Criteria
The recommendations are based on:
1. The qualifications of the applicant for the Top-up grant
2. There is no strict age limit, although applicants below 40 years are preferred
3. Programs are encouraged to enlist female candidates, as they are generally underrepresented.

Validation of the knowledge in the student’s country
Selected students need to do their thesis at Ghent University. The Top-up grant is for 2 master years, but the grantee needs to prove at least 50 credits in the first master year.
General eligibility requirements include that you have financial need, are a U.S. citizen or eligible noncitizen, and are enrolled in an eligible degree or certificate program at your college or career school.
There are more eligibility requirements you must meet to qualify for federal student aid.
What to Look For When Applying for a Grant
Before applying for any scholarship, bursary, or grant, always check the following details. It might save you considerable time and effort applying to something you’re not eligible for in the first place:
Award: How much do successful applicants get, how is this paid, and what can it be used for? Also, how many awards are up for grabs?
Eligibility Criteria: Do you meet all the conditions set out? An award may only be eligible to applicants for a specific course or subject or based on certain personal circumstances (e.g. household income, disability, place of residence). Some conditions might surprise you e.g. you accept a university or college as your firm choice on your UCAS application.
Application Process: Over a quarter of students we spoke to who received a scholarship or bursary, were eligible based simply on their grades. Alternatively, you might have to complete an online application nothing too taxing, but definitely worth spending a few hours of your Saturday afternoon getting right.
At the other end of the scale, more competitive or specific awards may demand more from you, including multiple stages e.g. writing a short essay, attending an interview, presenting a piece of work, or performing an audition.
Also, check any documents, evidence, or portfolios you need to submit hopefully, you already have these to hand from completing your UCAS and/or student finance applications as well as who makes the final decision.
