About Tuckwell Scholarship

For outstanding young people, this scholarship is a once-in-a-lifetime chance.

The financial assistance provided to Tuckwell Scholars is meant to support you during your time in college and free you up to concentrate on the things that matter.

As a Tuckwell Scholar, you will receive:

1. $24,700 per annum (2023 rate) (increasing with inflation) each year for the length of your undergraduate degree program (studying full-time), to cover on-campus residential costs, books, and general living expenses

2. Guaranteed access to ANU-approved student accommodation

3. An allowance to assist with your move to Canberra and to support two annual return journeys (e.g. airfares) between your home and the University for each year of your degree.

4. An allowance to help cover the transport costs for your parents to attend Commencement Weekend at the start of the program, and

5. An ANU Sports Centre membership

Leadership Development & Enrichment

Scholars have the opportunity to fulfill their potential and develop leadership skills that will help them to make a positive contribution to ANU, their local community, and to Australia.

Scholars will be able to:

1. Attend seminars and workshops to develop essential skills, knowledge, and behaviors.

2. Learn from and be mentored by senior Scholars.

3. Attend an orientation and camp.

4. Attend Academic Dinners and connect with ANU academics.

5. Attend networking events and connect with Scholars in specific subject areas.

6. Contribute to the annual Interview Weekend and other program events.

Scholarship Eligibility Criteria|Commencing at ANU in 2024

To apply for a Tuckwell Scholarship for study at ANU commencing in 2024, applicants must:

1. Be eligible to apply to study at ANU in 2024 via the ANU Direct Application system.

2. Commence and complete Year 12 full-time in 2023, at a school located in Australia.

4. Be 17, 18, or 19 years old on 20 February 2024 (born on or between 21 February 2004 and 20 February 2007), being the commencement of Semester 1, 2024.

5. Be an Australian citizen, Australian Permanent Resident, or the holder of an Australian humanitarian visa, and be in possession of the relevant Birth Certificate, Citizenship Certificate, or Visa by 22 May 2023, being the closing date for Stage 2 applications this year.

6. Be predicted by their school to achieve an Australian Tertiary Admissions Rank (ATAR) of 95 or higher. Applicants who are eligible for consideration under the Educational Access Scheme (EAS) may apply for a Tuckwell Scholarship if they are predicted by their school to achieve an ATAR of 90 or higher.

Have undertaken:

  • At least one high school English course/unit in at least one semester during Year 11 or Year 12; and
  • At least one high school Maths course/unit in at least one semester during Year 11 or Year 12.

Candidacy Requirements

1. Scholars must commence an undergraduate program at ANU in Semester 1, 2024.

2. Scholars must adhere to the Tuckwell Scholarship Conditions of Award, as amended from time to time, for the full duration of their Scholarship.

Scholarship Application Process | How to Apply

All eligible applicants are considered against four criteria before applying:

  • Academic potential and achievements;
  • Other significant achievements of any type;
  • Demonstration of the Tuckwell Attributes; and
  • Connection and commitment to Australia.

Tips to guide you when applying in 2023 to commence at ANU in 2024. Before commencing an application, you should:

  • Review the Conditions of the Award
  • Read the Tuckwell Scholarship Application Guide
  • Discuss your interest, suitability, and eligibility for the Scholarship with a teacher, principal, Head of Year, or careers counselor.

To apply to commence study at ANU on a Tuckwell Scholarship in 2024, you must:

  • Complete and submit the ANU Direct Application as soon as possible and before 3 April 2023 AND
  • Complete and submit the Tuckwell Scholarship Stage 1 Application Form as soon as possible and before 12 April 2023.

If you want to apply, you must select “yes” when the ANU Direct Application asks if you want to apply for a Tuckwell Scholarship.

You’ll receive an email inviting you to the Tuckwell Scholarship Stage 1 Application Form two business days after submitting your ANU Direct Application.

You can access the Tuckwell Scholarship Stage 1 Application Form as soon as you submit your ANU Direct Application.

Stages of Tuckwell Application

There are then three stages to the Tuckwell application:

Stage 1: Opens on 1 March 2024 and closes on 12 April 2024

In Stage 1, you are asked for personal information as well as specifics about your academic and extracurricular interests. They will ask your Head of Year or an appropriate person for more information if, following submission, you are longlisted in Stage 1.

You will only be required to provide this information if the program contacts your Head of Year or equivalent. The 150 candidates that advance to Stage 2 will be chosen using the data from this information.

Stage 2: Opens 15 May 2024 and closes 26 May 2024

Longer questions are asked at this stage just provide the Selection Panel with more information about you than just your accomplishments. Also, your Principal’s recommendation is included.

The program will get in touch with your principal, who must provide a reference by the deadline in May. The 50 candidates that advance to Stage 3 will be chosen using the data from this information.

Stage 3: Held 7-9 July 2024

Step 3 usually entails a face-to-face interview at ANU. Those who have been shortlisted will receive specific information in mid-June.

The Selection Panel will learn more about you during the interview, including how you best exhibit the Tuckwell qualities and your connection to and commitment to Australia.

Final applicants are chosen based on personal fit as well as a selection of a broad and balanced cohort of pupils. The 25 Tuckwell Scholars for 2024 will be chosen using the data from this article.
