The Bartlett Promise scholarship is a form of financial aid given to students for advanced education. Scholarships are generally given out based on a number of criteria, including academic excellence, diversity and inclusion, athletic ability, and financial need. In order to address the lack of diversity in the built environment, The Bartlett Promise is a long-term initiative to draw students from a wider range of backgrounds.

For the course of their degree programs, the scholarships will pay the students’ tuition, living expenses, and educational expenses.

Together with financial assistance, recipients will also get career guidance, coaching, and personal support.

Their Goals:

  • Provide a university education open to all, regardless of means
  • Diversify the student body, and therefore diversify built environment professions

Scholarship Eligibility Criteria

The Bartlett Promise strives to make postgraduate research courses at The Bartlett, UCL’s Faculty of the Built Environment, more accessible to students from underrepresented backgrounds.

Mandatory criteria for 2024-25. Candidates must:

1. Be UK domiciled with home fee status or a forced migrant (as defined by UCL1) in the UK

2. Have accepted an offer of admission to an undergraduate program to start in 2024/25

3. Not have completed an undergraduate degree at UCL or anywhere else previously

In addition to these mandatory criteria, candidates must meet at least one of the additional criteria:

4. Be in financial need as assessed by UCL

5. Be from a Black, Asian, and Minority Ethnic background

6. Be from a Gypsy, Roma, or Traveller community

7. Have a disability

8. Be a careleaver

9. Received (or were eligible for) free school meals

10. Attend (or have attended) a low-performing school for either GCSE or A levels

11. Live in a disadvantaged area

12. Be the first generation in the family to attend university at the undergraduate level

The Bartlett Promise Undergraduate Scholarship

The Bartlett School of Architecture or The Bartlett School of Planning undergraduate students who are UK citizens and have home fee status are eligible for this award.

This scholarship aims to make undergraduate study at The Bartlett, UCL’s Faculty of the Built Environment, possible for students from underrepresented backgrounds.

Value:

For the typical duration of the program at UCL, full tuition fees are combined with an annual allowance (£15,364) to cover living and educational costs. Additionally, all Promise scholars will get ongoing academic and career help while they are in school.

Number of Awards: Up to ten scholarships are available to students starting in September 2023.

The scholarship is available to Prospective undergraduate students.

The Bartlett Promise Ph.D. Scholarship

The Bartlett Promise aims to make pursuing a Ph.D. at The Bartlett, UCL’s Faculty of the Built Environment, possible for students from backgrounds that are underrepresented there.

Value:

For the typical length of the MPhil/Ph.D. program at The Bartlett, full tuition costs plus an annual allowance to cover living and study expenses (£19,668) are required. Additionally, all Promise scholars will get ongoing academic and career help while they are in school.

The number of awards: Up to four scholarships are available to students starting in September 2023.

Level: MPhil/Ph.D.
