1. Diversity Abroad International Ambassadors Initiative

For current students or recent graduates who intend to study, intern, volunteer, or teach overseas, the Overseas Ambassador Program was established.

As overseas correspondents, the Overseas Ambassadors will encourage other members of the DiversityAbroad.com community to travel by sharing their experiences.

Your words will motivate other diverse students to travel abroad and push them to reconsider how study abroad opportunities can be accessible to all by writing insightful articles, sharing uplifting videos, and posting beautiful pictures and videos about your new surroundings, cross-cultural observations, and personal growth.

Scholarship Award

In collaboration with the AIFS, Diversity Abroad will provide two $500 summer stipends in addition to five $500 stipends each for the autumn and spring semesters.

  • Opportunity to publish and promote your blog posts, images, and videos on social media and DiversityAbroad.com
  • The chance to join the Diversity Abroad Community as a representative of the Diversity Abroad mission, vision, and values

Scholarship Eligibility Requirements

1. You must be a full-time student or recent graduate of an American institution or college.

2. Possess a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.75 in a U.S. university or college that is accredited.

3. You are driven, inventive, and passionate about working internationally.

Overseas Ambassadors serve during a 4–6-month time frame, depending on the length of their chosen study abroad program.

2. U.S. Department of State: Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program

The Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship is a grant program offered by the U.S. Department of State that enables students with limited financial resources to study or intern abroad and acquire skills vital to our country’s security and economic competitiveness.

Undergraduate students from the United States who are receiving Federal Pell Grant support at a two-year or four-year college or university are eligible to apply for the Gilman Scholarship Program in order to take part in study and internship abroad programs all over the world.

Scholarship Award: $100 – $5,000

Scholarship Eligibility Requirements

1. A citizen of the United States.

2. An undergraduate student in good standing at an accredited institution of higher education in the United States (including both two-year and four-year institutions);

3. Receiving a Federal Pell Grant during the time of application

4. In the process of applying to, or being accepted to, a credit-bearing study abroad or internship program, or a virtual international program.

3. Tortuga Study Abroad Scholarship

Students who are passionate about learning abroad and wish to travel the world are given the Tortuga Study Abroad Scholarship twice a year.

Our goal at Tortuga is to make travel simpler for everyone, especially study abroad and gap year students.

Customers “pay it forward” by sponsoring scholarships for students just like you when they purchase baggage from us.

Tortuga Study Abroad Scholarship

The winner of the Tortuga Study Abroad Scholarship will receive:

  • $1,000 scholarship for studying abroad
  • 1 travel backpack

The scholarship may be used for tuition, room and board, books, or travel. Funds will be sent directly to the winner’s study abroad program or university.

In cases where this is not possible, alternative arrangements will be made.

Scholarship Eligibility Requirements

To apply for the Tortuga Study Abroad Scholarship, you must:

1. Be a U.S. citizen, permanent resident, or currently studying in the United States on a student visa

2. Be a full-time undergraduate student in good academic standing at a four-year, degree-granting college or university in the United States

3. Have applied to or been accepted into a study abroad program eligible for credit by your college or university

  • Submit your application by November 15, 2024. The winner will be announced on November 30, 2022.

4. Fund For Education Abroad

The mission of the Fund for Education Abroad (FEA) is to provide scholarships and ongoing support to students who are underrepresented among the U.S. study-abroad population.

FEA makes life-changing, international experiences accessible to all by supporting students of color, community college, and first-generation college students before, during, and after they participate in education abroad programs.

Scholarship Eligibility Requirements:

1. U.S. citizen or permanent resident

2. Currently enrolled as an undergraduate at a college or university in the U.S.

3. The study abroad program must be eligible for credit at the student’s home institution

4. Study abroad program must be at least 4 weeks (28 days) in the country/countries

  • Scholarship Award: $1,000 – $5,000

5. National Security Language Initiative for Youth (NSLI-Y)

The U.S. State Department sponsors a program called the National Language Security Initiative to promote language learning in particular languages that the country has deemed to be of significant importance.

Through one of their programs, the scholarship will pay for language immersion courses in Arabic, Chinese (Mandarin), Hindi, Indonesian, Korean, Persian (Tajik), Russian, and Turkish.

Scholarship Eligibility Requirements

To be eligible for NSLI-Y applicants must:

1. Be a U.S. citizen at the time of application

2. Have a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 2.5 or higher on a 4.0 scale or the equivalent

3. Be 15-18 years of age at the start of the program

4. For 2024 summer programs: birthdate between July 10, 2004, and June 10, 2008

5. For 2024-2025 academic year programs: birthdate between August 30, 2004, and June 30, 2008

6. Be enrolled in grades 9-12 (high school or home school equivalent) at the time of application

7. Not be in either of the two ineligibility categories described below:

  • A current or previous participant in ECA exchanges
  • Family member employment

6. Phi Kappa Phi Study Abroad Grants

Phi Kappa Phi International Study Grants are intended to support undergraduates who are studying abroad in order to gain knowledge and experience in their academic subjects.

A total of 175 $1,000 awards are given out each year.

Applicants must attend a school with a functioning Phi Kappa Phi chapter, but they are not required to be members of the Society.

Scholarship Eligibility Criteria

You are eligible to apply if you meet all the following:

1. You are an undergraduate attending an institution with an active Phi Kappa Phi chapter.

2. You have a cumulative grade point average of 3.75 or higher on a 4.0 scale.

  • They do not round up – meaning a 3.74 GPA does not qualify.

3. Your study abroad program begins between May 1, 2024, and June 30, 2024.

4. You have applied to or been accepted into an accredited study abroad program before the session deadline and provide a letter of acceptance or a letter confirming your application, on official letterhead, as part of your application.

5. You are not a sitting Phi Kappa Phi board member, divisional vice president, member of the Study Abroad Award committee, or Society employee at the time of application or announcement.

  • Transcripts are required for each academic institution granting credit hours
Application Process

1. Through our online application platform, you will submit your application. During the application procedure, you will have to upload your supporting documents.

  • A copy of your transcript(s), two letters of recommendation, and a letter of acceptance into a recognized study abroad program are among the additional materials you must provide.

2. To ensure that your documents are accessible, please post them as PDF files. If your GPA is clearly displayed on your unofficial transcripts, we will accept them.

3. There is a choice in the application to send a notification asking your letter writers to upload a letter of reference on your behalf if they wish to maintain their anonymity.

March 15, 2024: Application deadline

May 1, 2024: Recipients will be notified

May 1, 2024, through June 30, 2024: The study Abroad program must begin during this time.
