What the President’s PhD Scholarship Covers

Each of the 50 available scholarships covers:

  • Full tuition fees
  • A £25,150 annual stipend (2024-25 rate) for living expenses
  • A £2,000 annual consumables fund for the first three years
  • Access to bespoke opportunities and events through the Graduate School
  • Recipients also benefit from the full range of postgraduate support at Imperial, including resources for disabled and international students, as well as professional skills courses.

President’s PhD Scholarship Eligibility 

Eligibility is highly competitive, attracting candidates with outstanding academic records and research potential.

Applications are accepted from talented individuals from Imperial College, the UK, and globally, without any nationality restrictions.

The scholarship supports both full-time and part-time study, encouraging diversity across all backgrounds.

Academic Criteria:

  • Candidates must have, or expect to achieve, a first-class or equivalent undergraduate or integrated Master’s degree.
  • Alternatively, those with a standalone Master’s qualification must have, or expect to achieve, a distinction.
  • Candidates who hold only an undergraduate or integrated Master’s degree must have a first-class or equivalent qualification.

Other Criteria:

  • The scheme is open to new PhD applicants from Imperial, the UK, and worldwide, with no nationality restrictions. However, some departments may not support international candidates.
  • Current Imperial PhD students are not eligible for this scholarship.

President’s PhD Scholarship | Application Process:

  • Applications are reviewed at three points throughout the academic year.
  • You must first secure a supervisor at Imperial who agrees to oversee your research.
  • There is no separate scholarship application form; you apply for PhD admission through Imperial’s online system, and your department will nominate you for the scholarship based on your academic merit and potential.

Additional Admissions Instructions

1. For the 2024-25 academic year, sponsored slots can begin as early as August 1, 2024, and as late as November 1, 2024.

2. Personal statements must be a 2-page paper:

  • The first page should include a personal statement, motives for applying to Imperial, and any further supporting information to strengthen your application.
  • The second page should contain your research proposal. If your department selects you for the scholarship, you may submit revised versions of this statement after submitting your application. You are urged to write in the first person.

3. Provide the names of two academic referees who can support your candidacy, such as your personal tutor or thesis supervisor. You should not mention your potential PhD supervisor. You are invited to share this information with your two referees, including the advice to use ‘they/them’ terminology (rather than gender pronouns).
