It is situated in an urban setting on a 120-acre campus and operates on a semester-based academic calendar. In the 2024 edition of Best Colleges, Occidental College holds the 35th position among National Liberal Arts Colleges and has tuition and fees amounting to $63,446.
The Occidental College campus is nestled in the suburban neighborhood of Eagle Rock, just 8 miles from downtown Los Angeles, which offers a plethora of opportunities for college students, including internships, dining, nightlife, and more.
Freshmen are required to reside on campus, and they have the privilege of having cars. This is advantageous because the campus is conveniently located within an hour’s drive of prominent attractions like Venice Beach, Disneyland, and the Sunset Strip in Hollywood.
Parking on campus is free with a permit, and approximately two-thirds of students bring their cars. Students can engage in over 100 clubs and organizations on campus, including social sororities, fraternities, gender-neutral organizations, and a multicultural sorority.
Occidental’s sports teams, known as the orange and black Tigers, compete in the NCAA Division III Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.
Occidental students also have the opportunity to take classes at CalTech and the Art Center College of Design, and they can pursue joint degrees at CalTech, Columbia University, and the University of Southern California’s Keck Graduate Institute.
Notably, this liberal arts college prides itself on its diverse undergraduate student body, with around 50% of students being Caucasian, approximately 15% Asian, another 15% Hispanic, and about 5% Black. Women constitute more than half of the student population.
