About Navajo Nation Scholarship
The Office of Navajo Nation Scholarship & Financial Assistance (ONNSFA) offers enrolled Navajo Nation members the chance to pursue their academic objectives.
The Navajo Nation engaged in a P.L. 93-638 contract with the Bureau of Indian Affairs in 1972 to administer the Higher Education Grant, giving rise to the ONNSFA, formerly known as the Navajo Higher Education Office.
The Department of Diné Education is where the ONNFA is located.
The Funding Sources
The ONNSFA distributes financial aid and scholarships from a number of sources, including Navajo Nation monies, trust funds, corporate funding, and government funds from the Higher Education Grant.
Over 6,000 students seeking a college degree or certificate received more than $24 million in financial aid and scholarships from the ONNSFA in 2018.
Eligibility Required Documents
1. Application: For the forthcoming term, applicants must submit a full application. Visit www.onnsfa.org to access the online form.
2. Certificate of Indian Blood: New applicants are required to deliver or mail an official Certificate of Indian Blood (CIB) to the agency office.
Unless there is a formal name change, continuing applicants are not required to submit a new official CIB if one is already on file.

3. Official Transcripts – Sealed, unopened official high school transcripts, GED results, and official transcripts of all colleges attended must be given in person or mailed to an agency office.
Official electronic transcripts (e-transcripts) that have been digitally certified and sent by a school’s designated delivery service, such as Parchment or the National Student Clearinghouse, are accepted by the ONNSFA.
Any other submission of a transcript to ONNSFA is deemed “unofficial” and will not be taken into consideration for determining a student’s eligibility for financial aid or awards.
4. Analysis of Financial Needs A Financial Need Analysis form must be signed and turned in to the financial aid office of the institution by students who want to enroll full-time.
Based on the data from the FAFSA, a financial aid officer at your institution will fill out the form and send it back to the ONNSFA.
Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) — All students must complete the FAFSA. Information on the FAFSA is shared with the colleges and/or career schools a student lists on the application.
NOTE: Some schools require students to sign additional documentation before processing an FNA. Check with your school to ensure that your FNA is processed without delay.
5. Letter of Admission: The institution the applicant will attend must issue a letter of admission or re-admission.
One of the six regional accrediting organizations that the ONNSFA has approved must grant the institution’s accreditation. (A list is available on page 5 of the Policies & Procedures of ONNSFA.)
Graduate applicants must submit two letters, one from the graduate college and the other from the graduate degree program, indicating full admission status.
Students who have already filed a Letter of Admission but have not been financed for at least one term are required to provide documentation proving their enrolment.
6. College juniors, seniors, and graduates applying for graduation must present a list of all the courses needed to finish the degree they wish to pursue. The “anticipated” graduation date and an advisor’s signature are required on the checklist.
7. Class Schedule: Applicants who are applying part-time must include their most recent class schedule. For Full-Time Applicants, submitting a current class schedule or registration is advised.
The following files can be uploaded by applicants to their student account in the student portal: the letter of admission, the graduation degree checklist, and the class schedule. All files must be in the.pdf format. All other paperwork needs to be delivered by hand or by mail to an agency office.
Scholarship Application Details
The online application for the Office of Navajo Nation Scholarship & Financial Assistance is available twice a year. The online application period for the academic year 2024 begins on March 15 and ends on June 27.
On June 27, 2022, at 5:00 PM MST, applications for the 2024 academic year must be submitted. On November 25, 2022, at 5:00 PM MST, applications for the 2024 Winter/Spring term must be submitted.

1. Go to www.onnsfa.org
2. Click on “Apply Online.”
3. Choose a Full-Time or Part-Time Application.
NOTE: Ensure entries are accurate and submit the application ONCE to avoid filing multiple applications. Submitting inaccurate information or multiple online applications will delay processing time.

To Create a Student Account:
1. Go to www.onnsfa.org and access the student portal.
2. Click “Create an Account”.
3. Create an account using the username and password of your choice.
New candidates: Create a student account one to two business days after submitting your application to give your application time to be processed.
To Check Your Application Status:
1. Visit www.onnsfa.org to access the student portal.
2. Press the “Check My Document Status” button.
3. Type in your password and user name.
When ONNSFA counselors make a decision on your application, log into your student account to access a list of received/outstanding documents and award or denial notices.
Within two to three business days, documents sent to ONNSFA will be posted to student accounts.
