About the Morehead Cain Scholarship

The Morehead-Cain Scholarship for Out-of-State Residents offers merit-based scholarships for students of the highest caliber. 

Students from out-of-state can be nominated by their high school counselor/administrative staff or applied to UNC early action and be referred by the office of undergraduate admissions. 

Graduating high school seniors who wish to pursue a degree at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and demonstrate good character, leadership skills, and physical vigor are encouraged to apply.

Eligibility and Requirements of the Morehead Cain Scholarship

Any interested person for this scholarship must have the following:

1. Demonstrate good character and leadership skills

2. Exhibit physical vigor

3. Nomination only or applied to UNC early action and referred by the office of undergraduate admissions

4. A resident of any U.S. state/territory other than North Carolina

5. Graduating high school seniors

6. Seeking a bachelor’s degree

7. Planning to attend the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill

8. Be a competitive applicant to UNC at Chapel Hill

9. Be on track to graduate in the spring

10. Scholarship awards are based on students’ accomplishments and potential in Scholarship, Leadership

How to Apply for the Morehead Cain Scholarship

1. Submit a resume that displays a snapshot of your high school accomplishments and involvement.

2. Include your email address on the resume!

3. Submit a personal statement that discusses your educational pursuits as well as your leadership and

4. Public service activities: Focus on the 4 scholarship criteria, as well as the following eight adjectives:

  • Bright
  • Collaborative
  • Self-Aware
  • Brave
  • Purposeful
  • Empathetic
  • Optimistic
  • Original
