First Year Grant
The Institute provides low-income first-year students with a grant to help with the extra expenses that come with the transition to college. This includes sheets and towels for your room, or a warm coat to make it through a Boston winter.
The First Year Grant of $2,000 is divided equally between the fall and spring semesters and will be credited to your student account along with other financial aid once you are registered for the semester. The grant is for first-year students only.
Outside scholarships and grants
There are many private scholarships that you can apply for on your own. MIT considers outside scholarships as additional money that you have available to reduce or cover your student contribution.
When your financial aid is calculated, they consider all the resources your family has available. Hence, outside scholarships are considered available resources. Any outside scholarship will first be used to reduce your student contribution.
However, if your outside scholarship is more than the $5,400 student contribution, the remainder will reduce your MIT scholarship. An outside scholarship cannot be used to replace the parent contribution.
