What are Minority Scholarships?
Underrepresented students in general or in particular fields of study at colleges are given scholarships specifically for minorities. Scholarships awarded to members of racial or ethnic minorities are frequently referred to as minority scholarships.
This isn’t always the case, though. Women still constitute a minority in fields like science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM), despite making up the majority of college students. Because of this, women may be partially eligible for STEM scholarships based on their gender.
The following categories may be eligible for minority scholarship awards:
- Racial identity
- Ethnicity
- Gender identity
- Sexual orientation
- Neurodiversity
- Disability status
Depending on the scholarship source, a financial need component may be included in some minority scholarships. Minority scholarships might cover a wide range of underrepresented groups, or they can be restricted to a particular minority group.
Certain minority scholarships might only be available to members of specific student groups, while others might have ambiguous restrictions such as not specifically mentioning any group.
Minority student scholarships may have specific academic requirements, such as specializing in a certain subject or having an interest in a particular business, or they may merely demand a general degree of academic competence.
Minority scholarships might cover a wide range of underprivileged groups or be restricted to a particular type of minority.
Certain programs might be reserved especially for first-generation, or “first in the family,” college students—those from households where there has never been a college graduate.
A healthcare student from one of the following racial groups, for instance, is awarded the Brown MAE Foundation Healthcare Scholarship: Black/African American, Native American/American Indian, Hispanic/Latin American, or Asian or Pacific Islander.
Candidates may be enrolled in any 4-year U.S. college or university as an undergraduate or graduate student, and they must also have a minimum GPA of 2.5.

10 Minority Scholarships
1. Excelen-SIA Academic Scholarship
Amount: $1,000
Deadline: July 15, 2024
Hispanics are currently the fastest-growing demographic in the nation, but they also have the highest high school dropout rate.
In addition to the typical obstacles associated with an education in schools, Latinos frequently have difficulties related to being first-generation students, helping out at home early in life due to financial difficulties, learning a new language, or experiencing a lack of educational opportunities.
2. NOPHNRCSE Scholarships
Amount: $1,000
Deadline: July 26, 2024
To qualify for the NOPHNRCSE Scholarship, candidates must meet the following requirements:
- They must be enrolled in their first through third year of college or university
- A high school senior
- Have been accepted there
- Graduate students are not eligible
- They must be pursuing a degree in agriculture, natural resources, or natural resources conservation (one scholarship will be given to a female student).
3. HUSTLE Hearts Foundation Scholarship
Amount: $1,000
Deadline: July 31, 2024
HUSTLE Hearts Charity Scholarships for the fall semester are given out in July, and by August 22nd, the college will receive the funds.
The HUSTLE Hearts Foundation will honour scholarship recipients during a special event in December. There will be three $1,000 and $500 scholarships given out.
4. Annie Ibok Scholarship
Amount: $1,000
Deadline: July 31, 2024
To help underprivileged students defray the increasing expense of their undergraduate education at historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs), the Annie Ibok Scholarship is a one-time grant.
This award is given in memory of the late Mrs. Annie Ibok, a devoted Bay Area resident, mother, and registered nurse who had a strong desire to help her community. Qualifications Be an incoming freshman in college.
5. Minority Teacher Education Scholarship
Amount: $4,000
Deadline: August 1, 2024
The goal of the Minority Teacher Education Scholarship (MTES) program is to address diversity in teaching in Florida.
The Florida Fund for Minority Teachers, Inc. has been providing high-calibre, highly qualified minority teachers to the wonderful state of Florida for more than 20 years. A Board of Directors selected by the Governor from higher education institutions oversees FFMT.
6. SWING Scholarship
Amount: $500
Deadline: August 1, 2024
Scholarship SWING The requirements for the SWING Scholarship are as follows:
- Applicants must fill out and submit an application;
- they must be female, women of colour, and provide documentation of their current full-time enrollment status at an approved higher education institution (such as a college, university, or technical institute) for the following academic year.

7. AEP Diversity in the Environmental Profession Student Scholarship
Amount: $1,000
Deadline: September 4, 2024
AEP San Diego Chapter helps students who are pursuing jobs in environmental fields.
The Student Chapter organizes networking events for nearby undergraduate and graduate students, grants annual scholarships, promotes internship placement, and provides student-specific programming.
8. Anthony Butts Scholarship
Amount: $5,000
Deadline: September 9, 2024
One first- or second-year underrepresented minority medical student residing in the New York metropolitan region will receive a $5,000 scholarship from the Wayne Anthony Butts Scholarship in appreciation of their exceptional academic performance, leadership, community engagement, and interest in urban health.
Candidates must be enrolled full-time in an authorized graduate program and be citizens of the United States or eligible for DACA.
9. Future Clinicians Scholarship
Amount: $20,000
Deadline: September 9, 2024
United Health Group founded the Future Clinicians Scholarship in 2023 with the goal of empowering underrepresented students in the health professions via professional growth, community service, and research participation.
10. The Gates Scholarship
Amount: $160,000
Deadline: September 15, 2024
An extremely competitive last-dollar award for exceptional minority high school seniors from low-income families is called the Gates award (TGS).
TGS recognizes outstanding student leaders annually with the goal of assisting them in reaching their full potential.
11. D.O.O.R.S Diversification Of Our Research Scientists
Amount: $5,000
Deadline: September 27, 2024
A researcher or scientist who is currently enrolled in a life science undergraduate program in their junior or senior year of study and who is at least eighteen years old can apply for the BioPharmaceutical Technology Center Institute (BTCI) and Promega Diversification of Our Research Scientists (DOORS) Award.
12. John J. Nelson Sr. Legacy Scholarship
Amount: $10,000
Deadline: September 29, 2024
Undergraduate students of African American descent enrolling in U.S. not-for-profit interior design or architecture programs recognized by NASAD, CIDA, or NAAB are eligible to apply for the John J. Nelson Sr. Legacy Scholarship.
13. OHM Advisors Diversity Scholarship
Amount: $1,000
Deadline: October 15, 2024
Qualified female and minority students who are enrolled or intend to enrol in an OHM Advisors STEM program or another comparable field of study are eligible to apply for the OHM Diversity Scholarship Program.
14. Rossiter Family Scholarship On Behalf of William J. Rizzo, Jr.
Amount: $10,000
Deadline: October 18, 2024
The scholarship is known as the Rossiter Family Scholarship is awarded in honour of William J. Rizzo, Jr., a former chair of TECET and a close friend of the Rossiter family, thanks to the generosity of Allen and Selina Rossiter.
Bill chaired the TECET Board of Trustees for several years during his tenure, and he also served on the TEC Board of Trustees from 1997 to 2008.
15. Annual Sphinx Competition
Amount: $50,000
Deadline: October 20, 2024
Young Black and Latinx classical string players (violin, viola, cello, or double bass) have the opportunity to compete in the Sphinx Competition, a national competition that offers mentorship and performance opportunities from seasoned professional musicians.
The competition is overseen by a panel of judges with international recognition. A video audition is one of the prerequisites for applications (please refer to the audition).
