Middle-Class Scholarship Program
Every year, the state of California provides cash for the Middle-Class Scholarship program. This funding helps UC students finance a portion of the cost of their education:
To apply for this scholarship, you must first apply for financial aid. No additional forms are necessary to apply for the Middle-Class Scholarship Program, but you must apply for financial help annually by March 2.
Scholarship Eligibility
New, transfer, and returning undergraduate students at the University of California or California State University may be eligible if they satisfy the following requirements:
- You must be a California resident or have AB 540 status
- Not in default on a student loan
- Maintain good academic progress.
- Family income and asset levels, excluding equity in a principal house and retirement savings, are less than the specified criterion for that year.
- Submit an FAFSA/California Dream Act application by March 2nd.

What to Expect?
The amount of your scholarship depends on your overall available resources, which include the following:
- Determine your “gift aid” amount, which includes federal, state, and institutional grants and scholarships.
- The “self-help” student contribution is $8,154 for all students.
- Dependent students with a household income above $100,000 are eligible for a parent contribution.
- The entire amount of your available resources will be subtracted from the cost of attendance to determine the amount of your Middle-Class Scholarship.
Award amounts vary from student to student because they are determined by the student’s resources and the cost of attendance.
Suppose your family’s income and household assets fall below the specified level and you qualify for this award. In that case, the California Student Aid Commission (CSAC) and your UC campus financial aid office will notify you of your scholarship amount.
NOTE:
- Your award amount is determined after receiving federal Pell awards, Cal Grants, and UC need-based awards.
- Award amounts fluctuate annually based on program funding availability.
- Your award may vary during the academic year if you obtain additional financial help, such as scholarships.
- The school will notify you of the award.
