Does Best Buy Have Apple Pay: Best Buy shoppers may now use Apple Pay to complete transactions made through the electronics retailer’s app, a major triumph for Apple in the competitive mobile payments market. Read further!
Apple Pay transactions are now confined to Best Buy’s app, but the company expects customers to be able to use the mobile payment method for in-store purchases later this year, the retailer stated Monday.
Best Buy was a significant sponsor of the Merchant Customer Exchange, or MCX, a group of merchants led by Walmart that created a competing mobile payment system.
“Today’s consumers have many ways to spend their money, and we want to give our customers as many options as possible in how they pay for goods and services at Best Buy,” the company said in a statement announcing the agreement.
Apple Pay, which debuted in October on the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus, is a crucial feature of the new Apple Watch, which was released last week. Its NFC technology enables customers to purchase goods and services by tapping their handsets on payment terminals in shops.
Apple faces significant competition from other organizations that provide comparable mobile payment services.
Samsung’s new Samsung Pay functionality is available on the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge, as well as a mobile payments service called Android Pay.
PayPal, the digital payments company that split off from eBay later this year, intends to purchase Paydiant, a startup that assists firms like Subway and Capital One in developing mobile payment choices.
Best Buy is one of numerous businesses affiliated with MCX, which seeks to compete with Apple Pay with its own CurrentC mobile payment system.
Apple Pay faced early criticism from a substantial percentage of MCX merchants, with some members of the consortium opting to deactivate users’ ability to use Apple Pay in preparation for the introduction of MCX’s alternative payments service.
The organization denies pressuring Rite Aid and CVS to disable NFC terminals in order to prevent Apple Pay from being accepted. CurrentC, which now employs QR codes instead of NFC, is scheduled to become widely available later this year.
MCX said Monday afternoon that Best Buy is still an MCX partner and backer of CurrentC.
“We understand — and strongly support — our merchant partners’ quest to do what’s best for their customers,” said Scott Rankin, MCX’s chief operating officer.
“As we have stated in the past, we are of the firm belief that there need to be at least 2 to 3 major players within the mobile payments ecosystem for it to succeed.”
Apple originally debuted the feature with around 500 financial institutions and 220,000 US retail locations that accept mobile payments via NFC’s short-range, secure wireless capabilities.
According to Apple CEO Tim Cook, in its first three months on the market, Apple Pay grew to more than 700,000 places.
Earlier Monday, the credit card company Discovery said that its 61 million cardholders will be able to link their Discover cards to the Apple Pay system later this year, providing Apple access to a vast pool of prospective customers.
With the news, Discover joins former partners Visa, MasterCard, and American Express, giving Apple control over all four major credit cards in the United States.
