How Many Grams are in a Pound

What is Gram?

In France, the gram was first used after the French Revolution. In a 1795 order updating the metric system and defining the gram as the weight of one cubic centimeter of water, the French used the name “gramme.”

What Does Pound Mean?

The word “pound” comes from the Roman phrase for a pound by weight, the Libra Pondo. The second Latin word pondo is where the English word “pound” originated. Why are pounds denoted by the symbol “lbs”? The first term, Libra, is where the “lb” comes from.

The weight of a pound has not always been the same. A pound was just 5,400 grains, or the modern equivalent of 0.350 kg, in mid-evil Britain.

In the royal mint in the Tower of London, a standard pound weight was retained. The troy pound replaced the English pound in 1527 with a weight of 6,750 grains, approximately the equivalent of 0.453 kg today. It is thought to have originated in Troyes, France.

Of course, the pound is now essentially unknown outside of the USA. Only three countries still utilize the pound: the US, Liberia, and Myanmar.

NOTE: The weight of a pound is equivalent to 453.592 grams (g), or 0.4536 kilograms (Kg).

Types of Pounds in Measurement

The most common types of pounds are:

Only in metallurgy is the troy pound employed; for all other measures, the avoirdupois pound is utilized.

0.45359 kilograms or 453.59 grams are equal to one avoirdupois pound.

373 grams make up one troy pound (in metric)
