Global Korea Scholarship

The GKS 2024, or 2024 Korean Government Scholarship Program for Graduate Degrees, application requirements were recently announced by the National Institute for International Education Development (NIIED).

In order to help international students from all over the world who want to study in Korea for a Master’s or Doctoral degree, the initiative seeks to provide 1300 scholarships.

Global Korea Scholarship Objectives

The Global Korea Scholarship (GKSmain )’s goal is to give overseas students the chance to pursue academic degrees at higher education facilities in Korea.

Through improving international educational interaction, this initiative aims to strengthen ties of friendship between participating nations and Korea.

It’s important to note that the Global Korea Scholarship replaced the Korean Government Scholarship Program in 2010. The name has been changed to GKS as a result.

Scholarship Period and  Benefits

Master’s Degree Program: 3 years

  • 1 year of Korean language program + 2 years of degree program

Doctoral Degree Program: 4 years

  • 1 year of Korean language program + 3 years of degree program

Research Program: 6 months or 1 year

Important Notes regarding Scholarship Period

Scholars in research programs and those who have attained TOPIK levels 5 or 6 will not need to take a Korean language course.

The remaining 6-month language program is waived for students who achieve TOPIK levels 5 or 6 within the first six months of the Korean language program, and they must begin their degree program the following semester (March 2024)

Eligibility Criteria to Apply for GKS 2024

The eligibility criteria for the Global Korea Scholarship (GKS) program for Graduate Degrees are as follows:

Nationality:

1. To apply for the GKS program, applicants must be nationals of nations that the National Institute for International Education Development (NIIED) has approved.

2. Parents or guardians of the applicant must be citizens of a nation other than Korea. They are ineligible to apply if they or one of their parents holds dual citizenship, including citizenship of both Korea and another nation.

3. Documentation from the Korean government demonstrating the renunciation of Korean citizenship must be submitted by applicants and their parents who previously had Korean citizenship.

4. A candidate will not be considered for the evaluation of their citizenship changes while they are being considered, with the exception of the Research and Development (R&D) program.

5. Overseas Korean applicants holding Japanese citizenship are eligible to apply if their parents hold permanent residency permits in Japan while holding Korean citizenship.

6. Applicants from all countries can apply to the R&D program.

Degree Requirements:

7. Candidates for the master’s program must hold a bachelor’s degree or have completed coursework that is at least as high as one.

8. A Master’s degree or an educational level at least as high as one is required for applicants to the doctoral program.

9. Research Program Applicant: Candidates must have been invited by one of the partner universities and satisfy the requirements listed below:

  • To be eligible for the postdoctoral research program, candidates must have their doctorates before February, 2024.
  • Candidates must have a Master’s degree and be employed as professors at a university to be eligible for the professor exchange program.
  • Program for Education, Science, Culture, and International Cooperation Professionals: Applicants must hold a Master’s degree and must be a professional in the field of Education, Science, Culture, or International Cooperation.

10. Applicants must have obtained the required degree (minimum level of education indicated above) by February 2024.

Grades:

11. Applicants must have a cumulative grade point average (CGPA) that satisfies at least one of the requirements below in order to be eligible for the GKS program.

12. For applicants to doctoral degree programs, the cumulative grade point average (CGPA) of their prior degree program, such as a master’s degree program, must be greater than 2.64/4.0, 2.80/4.3, 2.91/4.5, or 3.23/5.0.

  • Also, candidates must place in the top 20% of their class or have a score percentile of 80% or above on a 100-point scale.

13. An academic transcript with the applicant’s CGPA or ranking information is required.

14. If an applicant’s transcript does not provide CGPA in any of the accepted GPA scales (4.0, 4.3, 4.5, 5.0, or 100-point scale), they must submit a transcript converted into one of the above GPA scales as a supplementary document.

Age:

15. Applicant must be under 25 years of age (born after March 1, 1999) for undergraduate program and under 40 years of age for graduate program.

Health:

All applicants must be in good health, both mentally and physically, to study in Korea for the entire duration of the program.

Note: The previous degree program for a doctoral degree program applicant is a master’s degree program.
