Breakthrough Junior Challenge
The Breakthrough Junior Challenge is an annual global competition for kids that encourages innovative thinking in science.
Students aged 13 to 18 from all around the world are asked to make and submit creative movies (maximum duration of 2:00 minutes) that bring to life a concept or theory in the biological sciences, physics, or math.
The submissions are evaluated based on the student’s ability to convey complicated scientific concepts in intriguing enlightening, and inventive ways.
The Breakthrough Prize Foundation organizes the Challenge, which Julia and Yuri Milner launched as part of their Giving Pledge to support research and scientific communication.
Challenge
You get it. You’ve grasped an important scientific theory, concept, or principle. Now, can you share your insight?
An inventive video may convey complex information that would need pages of writing to express. To participate in the Breakthrough Junior Challenge, make a short video (2:00 – two minutes max) explaining a great idea in one of the following fields:
Subjects include
- Physics,
- Mathematics, and
- Life Sciences.
Your film can take whatever format you want: animation, talking head, documentary, dramatic reconstruction, etc.
It’s important to remember that video is a dynamic visual medium; employing diagrams, simulations, physical demonstrations, and so on is far more successful than standing in front of a blackboard and talking.
Prizes
If your video is selected as the winner, you will receive:
- $250,000 post-secondary scholarship.
- $50,000 Prize for Your Teacher
- $100,000 Breakthrough Science Lab.
