Abel Visiting Scholar Program is a fully funded research program for professional mathematicians in developing countries. This program allows them to visit and work with international research collaborators for one month. Read on to know the eligibility criteria and how to apply.

Abel Visiting Scholar Program

The course is intended for post-doctoral mathematicians who are just starting out in the working world.

It is intended to provide mathematicians who wish to maintain a successful research program with the chance for a “research sabbatical,” a crucial complement to teaching and other academic responsibilities.

The Abel Visiting Scholar Program is fully funded by the Abel Prize in mathematics and is administered by the Commission for Developing Countries of the International Mathematical Union.

Usually, up to 3 Grants are available per year.

Eligibility Criteria

Applicants must:

1. Hold at the time of application a Ph.D. in Mathematics,

2. Be based in a developing country at the time of application (As defined by IMU)

3. Hold a position in a university/ research institution

4. Be in the early stages of their professional careers, more precisely: the applicants should:

  • not yet be of full professorial rank but have a working contract in a university/ college
  • and be under 35 years of age on the day of the application deadline.

The maximum age may be increased by up to three years in the case of an individual with a broken career pattern.

This should be noted in the application together with the reason for the broken career pattern. Applications from women mathematicians are strongly encouraged.

Scholarship Application Requirements

Each completed application that is submitted online must contain the following:

1. The candidate’s and host’s CVs, together with a list of recent publications (max. 3 pages each)

2. Research statement for the trip: Research statements should outline the study’s goals and identify the mathematicians the candidate will work with. The candidate must already be in contact with the potential international research partner for research purposes (s). Collaboration history will be viewed favorably. The overseas partner’s home institution should host the collaboration.

3. A formal invitation from the overseas research partner’s institution

4. Recommendation letter If the overseas research partner (the host) did not write the letter of recommendation, the application should contain a statement from the host approving the study plan.

5. A copy of the Ph.D. certificate

6. A statement about the current employment status/position in the home institution signed and stamped by the employer. The statement should include the duration of employment. Please use the template attached.

7. A budget estimation. Please, use the Tentative Budget Form.

8. A photograph of the applicant for the IMU website

9. In case of a research visit longer than a month, applicants must attach proof of matching funds from the host institution to cover living expenses

Please merge all required documents into one (1) PDF file to be uploaded onto the Online Application Form.

Applications not completed by the deadline, cannot be considered for evaluation. Applicants are asked to submit their application at least two weeks in advance.

How to Apply for the Abel Visiting Scholar Program 2024

1. All applicants must use the online application portal to submit their applications.

2. The applications from the candidates must include an explanation of their research proposals.

3. The candidates are requested to submit a list of the researchers they would want to work with.

4. A declaration about the candidates’ present position or employment status at their home institution must be provided, and it needs to be signed and stamped by the employer. The statement needs to be in the prescribed style. There is a template for the statement.

5. A rough budget form must be completed by the contenders.

6. Before uploading the completed PDF file to the online application form, candidates must combine all necessary documentation into one.

Scholarship Upcoming Deadlines

Applications must be received at least four months before the desired starting date.

The selection committee will review the applications and award fellowships every four months. The result is announced on the Abel Visiting Scholar Recipients page.

The following deadlines apply:

  • August 31, 2023, for visits between January 1 and April 30, 2024
  • December 31, 2023, for visits between between May 1 and August 31, 2024

Please Note: If your application is not complete by the deadline, it cannot be considered for the evaluation round.

Selection Criteria

The selection criteria are based on the quality of the project and the benefit/added value for the home institution/country.
